This is an example of a European smallsword, or court sword, which I made to use for my certification in smallsword with the SAFD. As such, it was made more with use than decoration in mind, and the blade is a blunt stage blade (a double-wide epee blade, from Triplette). The design is somewhat unusual, but based on historical examples. A more typical smallsword reproduction these days will either have a solid knuckle bow or none at all. I lacked the wherewithal to do a large cast guard, and didn't have the barstock on hand to make one through stock removal, and had seen examples of historical smallswords with chains in place of knuckleguards, so I thought this would be a distinctive design for me to play with. The pommel is only slightly modified- it was a cast brass lion head pommel, ordered from Triplette along with the blade. The rest was made from sheet or barstock brass, and the handle is hardwood with steel wire wrapping. << Back |
